Fiberglass Outrigger referbishing

Aloha,

I have never built a rod and this is my first attempt at wrapping guides and finishing work. I am attempting to refurbish my 15 foot fiberglass outriggers for my boat. I have stripped and sanded them down. I had left over Quantum 99 marine paint that I painted my boat with and painted the outriggers with the Quantum 99. At this point I started doing research on finishes/coatings for outriggers. I want to coat the entire outrigger with something before I put all the other hardware on and epoxy. I could not find info on coating fiberglass outriggers but kept finding more and more info about rod building and rod coatings. This has affected me in two ways. Now I want to build my own deep sea fishing rod and has confused even more about what I can use to coat my outriggers. As rod builders, I know some of you have experience with fiberglass/carbon fiber outriggers. I was hoping some of you can chime in and give me some schooling that can help me finish this project. Ahi season is right around the corner.

Mahalo!

Kelly

If this is the paint you used? I would say you don't need to do anything. [www.jamestowndistributors.com] Unless you want a clear topcoat? [www.jamestowndistributors.com] . That's top notch paint so you should be good to go! Just my 2 cents. Cheers Jaa

Aloha Jay,

It's the exact paint I used and yes your right. I wanted to give it a little gloss because the paint I used was the Satin in Voodoo Black to give my boat contrast between the glossy green. I was hoping I could just spray it with some kind of automotive polyurethane, couple of light coats and call it a day.

Mahalo,

Kelly

2K clear coat should work, test a spot first to make sure it's compatible, It would be cheaper. it is automotive clear coat. [www.amazon.com]

Thank you Jay!

Makes this a little more easy to complete. All I have is three eyes to wrap and epoxy and its done. The side affects of doing this, is now I have rod building fever. You may be reading more post from me in the future as I try to build my first deep sea tuna rod. Mahalo for your assistance!
