are you doing it in a spiral ? if so try it at 7-8 inches and see how the line spools and fine adjust from there The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! Think out side the box when all else fails !!! Wi. Re: For Roger Wilson ( Lake trout ice rod)

Lynn,
With the case of an ice fishing rod that is used in freezing weather in the open, I would NEVER wrap the rod with a spiral wrap. Just too much potential issue with ice on the line causing issues. As you indicated, you are starting with a #10 minima double foot. I likely would only use a double foot for the first or possibly the first two guides. Then, go to a single foot guide but I would not go down to less than a size 8 guide and tip - if you fish in the open in subzero weather in the open as many of my clients do. Remember, in these conditions, when ice builds up on the line and the guides, the typical customer is going to beat the tip against the ice to knock off the ice and get back to fishing. So, they need to be built strong. Went down to the shop and took the measurements off of my template. For the 40 inch rod - measuring from the butt of the blank. 1st guide - 15 inches 2nd guide 21 inches 3rd guide 26 inches 4th guide 31 inches 5th guide 36 inches Tip I use the same guide distances, whether the rod is built as a spinning rod or a casting rod. In a casting rod, I use the minima guides which are taller guides and keep the line off of the rod. The purpose of the rod is to function in tough conditions and to keep on fishing in spite of wind, gales, snow, water and ice. Make it a good functional tool that keeps fishing no matter the conditions. Take care Re: For Roger Wilson ( Lake trout ice rod)
