I'm sure this an easy one for you guys: what is the maximum time you would be comfortable waiting in between coats of epoxy. A week, longer?
I've put 2 coats of epoxy on a surf rod in back to back nights and it looks pretty good. I just want to build up a few of the larger guides where it looks a tad thin. Its 48 hours since last coat of epoxy and I'm sure it won't be a problem yet but got me wondering. Thanks -Mark Re: Epoxy question

No problem applying another coat after 48 hr or longer. I have recoated weeks to months later with no problems.

The larger problem in waiting more than a few days between applications is that enough time elapses for various things to get on the current layer of epoxy. The longer you wait, the more likely it is that somebody will handle the rod; something airborne will light on it, etc. Generally if you can, try to recoat within 3 to 4 days. You can certainly wait longer, but that only opens the door for other "things" to happen.

Mark, I'm just getting started with rod building, however, most of my knowledge with epoxy is from strip built kayaks and their glassing and epoxing of the wood. Most of the big resin companies ( West,Mas,and Raka) all suggest recoating before hard cure stage for a good chemical bond which is superior to mechanical bonding (sanding). If the finger nail can dent the coating it's ready for the second coat, However I am not sure this is all important on a fishing rod, hopefully others will give better advice. All the best Nick R. That's true. If both applications are applied within a certain time frame you essentially end up with just one actual "coat." Beyond a certain time frame, two applications result in two "coats."

Got it!!! And Thanks for the input!!! Just finished putting the third coat on. Looks great so don't have to worry about an excessive delay in applying it. Good to know I have that window of opportunity in the future.

I apply my 2nd or 3rd coats after 24hrs each and have had no problems at all. I use Threadmaster lite.
