Is there a product similar to the UV activated resin that is used for fly tying as a wrap finish? Would sure speed up dry times.

Disregard. Googled it. Many reasons why it doesn't work as well as 2-part epoxy.

There was a sponsor here many years ago that had one, worked fine for me. What's the problems I didn't see?

From what I read at other rod building forums;
Leveling, didn't do well because of the quick setting.
Viscosity, a bit runny so hard to control.
Brittle, may crack or cause flat spots due to its rigidity.

Charlie if you want cut finish time down then use the 1 step finishes like Perma gloss luma seal thread master1 it just won't be a deep lens look but will last it is the lightest finishing process you can do



what I don't get is what is the big issue with getting everything done so fast like it is a race or something doing this IMHO only serves to create problems for you when your doing a build got to do it fast hurry through important parts of building short cut as much as you can and in the end you got something you could buy off the rack in the store so then what is the point of building ?
slow down do it right the first time and you won't have issues with assembling any part of a rod. the top 3 problems that seem to surface the most in order is 1 finishing ,2 reaming grips , 3 wrapping

Yes Matthew, of course you're right, hurrying does cause mistakes. I do like the result with Flexcoat. Just wondered for someone else.

There are situations, particularly with repair jobs, where you need to get a guy back on the water quickly. In these type instances, the UV cured finishes can really be a great help. The customer can be helped while he waits and doesn't have to return days later for a pick-up. These finishes definitely have their place in the rod building world.

Regarding viscosity, I found a brand I use for fly tying that comes in a thin, a thick, and a flex version. Not sure about the cost of buying big enough sizes for regular rod-building. Search for UV cure epoxy and I'm sure you'll come across it. I never thought of quick repair, but this stuff would be perfect for that, where speed takes priority over appearance.

ah you might be better off looking at heat cure epoxy as most cure at 100 -150 degrees some lower temps you would be able to do a quick hack repair and cure it with a heat gun best part is no special equipment needed like lights or safety eye shielding
