I am refurbishing a med/heavy spinning rod from the late 60's or early 70's. All the guides have been cut off except for the tip-top. Some of the wrapping remains for each guide that is missing so I know there were only 4 guides plus tip which is a size 6. My question is how many running guides should I use or alternately which guide should be the choker guide? The rod was custom made so I am planning on using the original guide spacing. I want to keep the rod as original as possible and plan on using Am. Tackle XBSG guides. TIA for all your help. Re: Vintage rod guides

Oops, meant to say I plan on XSG guides. Re: Vintage rod guides

Pac Bay makes the XSG guides. Back in those days they didn't have choker guides, they used the "Cone of Flight" system. Re: Vintage rod guides

Thank you Spencer, that clears up a lot. I've only ever built fly rods so this project is definitely a learning experience. Re: Vintage rod guides

The last 4-guide spin rod I can remember was a nine-foot surf rod with a HUGE, fold-down, hinged choker guide which was spring-loaded and locked into place. This was to allow it to be more easily and safely transported. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
