Not knew to rod building, however my original teacher did all the math and of course I never fully grasp his concept at that time. I have read on here, others like myself who have similar issues. I have re-read all my books and have visual wrap software. Billy's book does have instructions for 3d Chevron just cannot determine where to start for how many axis are need? What actually determines this anyway and why is it not explained in these books or is it? I'm not giving up I need a hobby for my retirement!

Use the search function above and search Optical chevron. Be sure to select all dates.

For me, the number of axis' depends on diameter of the blank. For instance I like 8 axis on medium to medium-heavy power bass rods. Don't need a lot of math or VW software. One benefit of the optical chevron is it's an open wrap so you don't have to worry so much about offset taper spacing stuff that closed wraps can benefit from. Find the circumference at approx. the middle of the wrap, divide by 4, and that's the spacing of your starting crosses.
Practice on a wooded dowel and you'll figure out what looks good to you.
