A good tool rest is essential if you are shaping item using gouges, scrapers and shaping tools.

But, if you are simply shaping grips using sand paper, then there is really not much need for a tool rest.

If you have a conventional lathe and are shaping objects using material that is harder than cork or eva, then the use of machine tools that require a tool. rest is essential.

If you have a conventional lathe - it will have a tool rest base. Then, when one needs to pick up a different tool rest for a particular job; the actual rest itself is rather inexpensive. For example:

You mention $80 for a tool rest. For little more, you can buy a complete conventional lathe that already comes complete with a tool rest.

I do agree that for grip turning, you will still need to purchase an additional head stock chuck, but then you will have the necessary tools to do your job easily and quickly.
