Help: Guide size for MHX 9"0 8wt blank
Posted by: Benjamin Thomsen (---.HfG-Gmuend.DE)

Hey guys,

at the moment iam looking for the components for a MHX blank. It's my second rod, before i build a blue halo glassrod.

Which guide size would you choose? I already researched a lot in the net and my choice would be:

16, 10, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4

Do you have an other idea?

Thanks and cheers,
Benni

Hey Benni,

On my Native 8wt build I ran

16, 12, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2

I used the CRB CCEG-16, and CCEG-12 for the stripper guides and then the REC RSNX Snake guides.

This is just personal preference, Hope this helps!

The Mudhole Catalog recommends the following guides for a 9' 8 wt: 16-12-6-5-4-4-3-3-3-3

Phil,
That spacing in the Mud Hole catalog is referring to a generic 7-9wt fly build for a 9 footer. Taylor chose size 2 to run out on his Native as a personal preference and because he mostly fishes in salt. The Native Fly kits from Mud Hole are set up with the following guides and spacing for the 908-4 Native. I have fished these with varying guide sizes from Size 1's up to Size 3's and in my personal opinion the Size 3 was to big so I would also say that Size 4's out to the tip are certainly overkill. Again, this recommendation is from my personal experience with the Native 8wt so others might have a slightly different opinion.

RSNX-1 4 3/16"
RSNX-1 8 7/8"
RSNX-1 14 1/4"
RSNX-2 20 5/8"
RSNX-2 28"
RSNX-2 36 1/8"
RSNX-3 45"
RSNX-4 54 11/16"
CLNAG-12J 66 7/16"
CLNAG-16J 79 5/16"

don't for get the KNOT it has to pass all the guides , the ones that are the most important are the tip section ,

Good set up to me. That is how I did my BVK 8wt and it will cast an easy 80' with a bonefish line. I think the main thing, at least for me, is the spacing of the stripper and the next two guides; They should line up like a bullseye. I would space the runners up to the 3 left guides that include the stripper then align those accordingly. You may have to tweak the spacing on that first runner (4th guide from reel) to make the spacing look right. You could also go up to a 20 on the stripper if you want it closer to the reel.

Benjamin,
If using a standard size tip top use #2 guides
Large tip top #3
X large #4
You might also consider a 9 guide set up if the rod will be used for light tippets

Thanks for the recommendation, Chris! I may have to try this out too.

Your plan, in my opinion, will work fine. There is no need for more than 3 sizes of guides. Two sizes for the reduction, then the same size to the tip. I have rods built with your plan, and they work fine.
