locating butt guides on a spin-cast rod

I am building my great-grand daughters personalized rods on MHX 4'6", FG, 2pc. Crappie, 2-6lb blanks. Girls' ages are 6 and 9. Rods will be used primarily for stocker rainbow trout in high lakes in Colorado. I normally would have used a 5" or 5'6" blanks for this application, but Mudhole had a great price on these blanks.

I probably did not search enough on the forum, but I did not find a discussion on building spin-cast rods. What size guide will work best as the butt guide and how far from the line opening on the reel to the butt guide?

Added thought; has anyone installed guides in a spiral fashion on spin-cast rods? Comments please

You can consider a spin-cast rod to be pretty much the same as a conventional bait-casting rod. And yes, you could spiral wrap it although the benefits will be somewhat less pronounced on such light rods.

Rex

I would start out at 18 inches from the center of the reel seat. Run a few trials and zero in on the final location.

I assume nylon monofilament will be used with these rods. It seems the diameter and relative limpness of the mono line being used should have a considerable impact upon the ideal guide size and spacing?

Place it at 20 inches and do a test. If it doesn't work vary it from 16-25 to find what you need.

Good luck

I use a butt guide size close to the same size as the line opening in the spin-cast reel.
