Aluminum tubing on rod butt

I am redoing an old rod and the rod blank is glued inside of an aluminum tube. The problem I have is the tube is bent giving the rod a nasty wobble when I turn it on my wrapper/dryer. How difficult would it be to take the aluminum off and put a straight tube on?

Thanks,
James

the tube might not be bent some that I have worked on have had two tubes that were joined under the reel seat I put a dowel inside the tube at the reel to keep it straight

James,
It would be a simple matter to remove the rod blank. Just put enough heat on the aluminum, until the adhesive softens and then you can pull the tube off the blank.

You might find that the easiest and quickest way to heat the tube up to the necessary temperature would be to put the tube over the flame of a gas stove or in the flame of a propane torch. It will quickly heat to the required temp - at which time - you will be able to easily slide off the tube. The aluminum conducts heat very well, so the aluminum and the aluminum side of the glue will heat and soften much quicker than the blank on the non aluminum side so you just have to work quickly to avoid doing any damage to the blank.

Good luck

I may have to try a propane torch or cut the tubing down so it doesn't have as much area to conduct the heat away. I have been using my alcohol burner and it doesn't heat up the tubing quick enough over the blank to soften the glue. I have been hoping heating and cooling will crack the glue loose but nothing so far.

try to cut around it in a spiral with a hack saw the way you cut a metal reel seat to get it off the blank and then heat
