I have 2 old bottles of Flex Coat Lite which I haven't used in 2 years. Without warming the bottles in my pocket I mixed them in a shot glass in a bowl of lukewarm water. It looked like it mixed okay, but quickly began getting a milky look to it when I poured it on aluminum foil. Was it too cold and therefore setting up too quickly. I don't believe the flex coat gets old. I'd appreciate some ideas/suggestions.

Not a Flex Coat user, but have had the resin, the part A, of other brands turn "milky" when stored in a cool place. Warming the resin cured the issue. I'd try warming the resin, mixing a test batch, and see if it cures normally and clear. If not, throw it out and get a fresh supply.

Cold does not make it set up quickly, it is the opposite, cold slows the curing, heat accelerates it. The resin can turn milky if cold, it can also crystallize, heating it should solve the problem.

Thanks, I'll mix a new batch tomorrow. I'll put the bottles in my pocket for awhile. I bet the resin was cold.

A short cut to warming them, is to put them in micro wave for a few seconds.

or a hot water bath will do the same , as well , mud hole has a bottle warmer you plug in the wall, I think

As far as Flex Coat, we say that you shouldn't buy a quantity that you can't use in 2 years, though, under ideal conditions, Flex Coat has lasted much longer.

Crystals in the Part A resin are formed when it is stored in a cool or cold area. The crystals should be melted with heat by any of the techniques listed above. All crystals should be melted prior to mixing.

No problem today. I warmed the bottles and it flowed fine onto my guides and wraps. Thanks for the help. I didn't think Flex Coat would get old. I've had these bottles, I think they're 2 oz., for 3 years. It seems fine to me. I've tried a few others, but I've stuck with Flex Coat Lite. I've never had any problem with it. JMO Everyone has their preferences. I'm no pro and I only build about 2 fly rods a year and a few ice rods.
