ice rod tip tops

Hi guys I have been working on some ice rods and I am trying to figure out a way to put a fly guide on the end for the tip top on a noodle rod with a very soft tip. I was thinking of leaving about of a quarter inch past the guide so I had something to hold onto while wrapping then cutting the extra off. Does anyone have any other ideas I could try. Thanks Justin

yes just crazy glue the guide in place and let it cure and then add the wrap from the top down

If you have a manual wrapper this works well for me.

Justin,
The simple and easy solution is to glue on an appropriately sized fly rod tip.

--------------
If you wish, just tape the fly rod guide in place about 3/8th of an inch from the tip. Tie it on and you are good to go. No need to trim off the extra blank.

REC makes fly rod tip-tops with a nickel-titanium wire eye. The wire is flexible and immune to "metal fatigue" which causes nearly every other metal or alloy to break after being flexed a number of times. You can bend a REC tip-top to shed ice build up as often as you wish without worry of breaking it.

for noodle tips, I use my flexcoat tip top glue, heat the fly guide foot and run it across the glue stick and place it where I want it. then I'll wrap over it by holding the rod in my hand.

When wrapping the tip of a "noodle ice rod" I will use this rod rest made from solid glass blanks and a plastic cutting board. Cut the blank to length, slot the end with a dremel tool and cut off wheel, and drill a series of holes in the base to accomodate the vertical rod supports.

With this rest, you can have the rest within an inch of the guide or tip that you are wrapping.

Or, if doing a guide wrap in the middle of a noodle rod, tip, I will use a pair of supports on each side of the blank to stabilize the blank while wrapping:
