I have been using Pro Kote finish and recently the resin has gotten grainy looking and really thick is this normal? I always close the bottle right after I get out what I need. Am I doing something wrong?

It might just be a bad batch or you might have been mixing proportional amounts. I'd try mixing a new batch and if its still like that then throw it away and buy another.

Sounds like it is starting to crystalize a bit. This can be remedied and the product returned to like new condition with a little heat. Take the top off the resin bottle and hit it with about 8 to 10 seconds in the microwave. Repeat if needed. This should take care of the problem. Note if it is only the resin that is doing this. If so, then this is very likely your problem and your cure.

All the comments above are true.

But, if you have any questions about rod building materials, whether it is the blank, thread, guides or finish - and if you don't have the satisfactory solution, purchase new components rather than spending a lot of time on a project that ends up with issues.

Good luck

DO NOT THROW IT OUT...... it is normal for ProKote to crystalize overtime. Simply heat it up in a pot of hot water and you are good to go.

Thanks guys. I will try the hot water or microwave. It is just the resin that has done the crystalizing. hopefully this fixes the problem its to expensive to throw out and buy new

Robert

Have not had your problem with Pro Kote, but did with another brand, and suspect storing the epoxy in a cool to cold area makes the problem more probable.

I switched to ProKote years ago and began storing the epoxy in a warmer corner of my work area - no more crystalized resin.

Thanks Donald La Mar I will remember that. I build all my rod in my basement so that might be a factor cuz it is a lot cooler down there

Robert,
Keep a small microwave oven handy in your shop to heat up a cup of coffee, or to heat up some rod finish or thinner. 3-5 seconds is all that is normally needed to warm the finish.

Good luck
