Splice in thread spool

I just ran across a splice in a spool of Madeira Polyneon. Wasn't the end of the world, but was just wondering if this is something I should be watching out for? Is it common for thread manufacturers to splice thread for larger spools?

Gudebrod was terrible about this. It's not uncommon, even today.
