thread finish on fly rod

In looking at fly rod wraps it appears that most are finished using something other than the traditional flex coat type finish. What do you use to finish fly rod wraps?

Not sure what rods you are looking at, but most that I am familiar with and those I build have rod wrap epoxy. Additionally all the fly rod manufacturers I know also use epoxy.

Factory rods use an epoxy type finish. Spar varnish is popular with the bamboo crowd and some fiberglass builders. Another good choice would be permagloss or lumiseal.

Not certain why you think the rods you saw were finished with other than finish epoxy or spar varnish. Why do you suspect something else?

If it is because the finish is near perfectly level, clear, and with a tiny and straight over run from wraps to blank it is the result of well practiced hands that consistently perform the same, time proven process.

Wrap finish is primarily the result of the finisher's skill and process, to a far, far lesser degree, the finish material.
