I'm installing a aluminum reel seat on a fiberglass fly rod blank. The end cap is not attatched. I assume the end cap is just epoxied? If so, is it glued to the reel seat before installing the reel seat? or glue it all at once? or maybe either one is ok? I mainly want to make sure the reel seat end cap is just glued on. Glue it as the last step after mounting the reel seat. Re: Reel seat end cap (fly rod)

either way will work the sure thing is to do it all at once then you will be assured that the blank is where is is to be The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! Think out side the box when all else fails !!! Wi. Re: Reel seat end cap (fly rod)

Thanks. I think I will glue it when I put the seat on so I get the butt of the blank against it for additional gluing surface. Re: Reel seat end cap (fly rod)

Phil E is correct. If the seat and cap are affixed at the same time there is a risk the heat from the exothermic epoxy will heat the air trapped in the blank, expand, and push the seat and cap backwards. Good idea to tape the cap in place until the epoxy cures. Re: Reel seat end cap (fly rod)

What Phil and Donald sid +2. BUT, make sure the end cap fits before you let the glue on the seat dry, to make sure there is sufficient clearance inside the reel seat. Re: Reel seat end cap (fly rod)

Popular opinion is to bond the reel seat on, then bond the butt cap in place later. Dating back to when I purchased previously assembled reel seats for fly rods, I've always assembled and bonded all parts of the reel seat in advance of mounting onto the butt of the blank. Naturally, I always ensure that when assembled the butt of the blank will bottom out in the reel seat.

I usually extend the blank butt out the reel seat if I am using a butt piece so it will attach to the blank and not just the seat. I know you weren't really asking about this but I thought I would ad it. If you are comfortable with doing it all at one time and have a good technique for it then go ahead and do it. I always attach the butt piece or the end cap the same time I mount the reel seat, I guess i don't know any better but it works for me and tape won't hurt.
