Some one gave me a two piece surf rod that broke at the male insert ferrule.I need to make some kind of attachment to insert inside the butt end of the rod to also fit in the top end .Would a wooden dowel make a good male ferrule?I can glue it in the bottom half and shape it to fit in the top half.

Nope, that would be a poor choice because the wood will snap under much pressure. Way better to use solid fiberglass for this purpose. Its strong and will bend a bit, which is what you want.

Any time that I splice a broken rod, I use an appropriate sized piece of blank on the inside of the rod - that would extend at least 4 inches up on the inside and down on the inside of the blank past the broken edges of the blank.

Then, I would also put a larger piece of blank on the outside of the blank that would extend at least 2 inches past each edge of any broken parts of the original blank. I precut all of the pieces. Then, I mix up a batch of slow drying epoxy and glue the inside pieces, the blank and the outside piece all together at the same time.

As soon as it is all assembled -- I will go over the outside of the blank with denatured alcohol to clean up any residue epoxy before it sets up.

Then I will do a 1/4 - 3/8th end wrap on each end of the outside patch blank to avoid any possibilty of the blank splitting.

I prefer to use fiberglass blank pieces for all of this work because fiberglass is a bit softer in action - compared to a similar sized graphite blank.

You can often find blank repair pieces at sporting goods stores in the form of an old rod bin, or Salvation army, Good well or pawn shops. Often you can find old rods that are perfectly suitable for repair pieces for very little $$.

Yup. Full length wrap. Lots of strain on ferrules for surf rods. Not just to cast, but also fighting big fish.
