For those who have glued up cork sections to make flyrod grips........what substance or anti-glue do you use to keep cork disks (sections) from gluing to mandrel while being
glued together? Mud Hole sells a product called "steel turning mandrel wax". Does it work for my need? Thanks ... Sam Slack Re: What substance to put on mandrel before glue cork sections

Yes, it works as does candle wax. Don't use too much else the grip will turn on the mandrel while you are turning down the cork. I apply a small amount of the Mudhole product (a jar is nearly a life time supply), let it dry, then buff off the excess with a paper towel. If you apply too much and the cork turns on the mandrel, make a bushing of masking tape on the mandrel and urn away. Re: What substance to put on mandrel before glue cork sections

Sam,
I use a full threaded mandrel and do not put anything on the mandrel. After the glue has dried, I chuck the mandrel into a 1/2 inch variable speed drill, put it in reverse and screw the mandrel back out of the grip. Then, I run a clean up drill bit through the grip to remove any glue vestige on the inside of the grip. Quick, easy and the grip never slips when gluing up or turning, since I put washers and locking nuts on the end of the grip when used in the lathe. Good luck Re: What substance to put on mandrel before glue cork sections

I do the same as Roger with a nut & washer on each to tighten them up, But I still use a bit of wax on the rod for easy backing out. I use Titebond for my glue-ups, And have had some corrosion on my rods from the water based glue, And this keeps the corrosion in check. Re: What substance to put on mandrel before glue cork sections

I use an old birthday candle rubbed on the mandrel. Works great.

I too use ordinary candle wax on threaded mandrels as well as the custom made ones.
If I have to build up the mandrel to the same taper as blanks I use masking tape before waxing, never had one fail yet. Martin E. Morris "Cap" U.K. builder Re: What substance to put on mandrel before glue cork sections

Plumber's candles from the hardware store are inexpensive, and a good size and shape also. Re: What substance to put on mandrel before glue cork sections

On threaded rod, I use Teflon plumbers tape. Chris Richer Iroquois ON Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
