I recently finished a rod that I'm particularly proud of, with the exception of one pretty major issue that really bothers me. I usually use flexcoat finish and I've had zero issues with it. This time, I decided to use ProKote as I had a stash I'd never used. The final product looks very nice BUT the finish seems soft, I can leave an impression with a fingernail pretty easily. I'm positive the the ratios were correct when mixing. Has anyone else had this issue? Could I correct this by applying a coat or two of Flexcoat? I'm a bit worried that a bit of pressure from fish will separate finish from the rod or thread creating some ugly blemishes or other problems.

ProKote is the softest finish on the market, and also takes much longer than flex coat to fully cure. Even fully cured, its still softer than other finishes. Not necessarily a bad thing, as it is more resistant to cracking and it doesn't yellow as fast. It depends on what your needs are.

While ProKote goes on like a dream, I stopped using it, because I had a number of rods that showed signs of epoxy chipping or denting entirely too soon. Especially in the areas of the hook keepers.

ProKote works best if you wait 24 hours between coats and 4 or 5 days to first rod use after the last finish application. And it seems to be more temperature sensitive than others. Takes a long time to cure in a cool shop.

Put a coat of flexcoat on it. Should have no problems. I have also found that prokote is soft, it gives you plenty of potlife but takes forever to set up. Flexcoat is a very nice finish, but my favorite is threadmaster, it sets up faster than most and gives a very hard finish. Some like to use the Billy Vivona mix which is a 50:50 mix of ProKote and Threadmaster which has properties intermediate between the two.

Ive noticed the same softness with ProKote as well. I just let it sit at least 2 days before doing anything with it. I havent seen any issues after that.
