Hi all,
I'm building my first 7/8wt spey rods. 500 to 650 grain heads for westcoast steelhead. Is threadsize A sufficient for the guide wraps? do I need to underwrap or overwrap? When would I need to stepup to size D thread? What about a 12wt single hand fly rod for tarpon? The larger size rods are new to me and I'm looking for advice on what I need to do differently for heavier builds? thanks Re: thread size for spey rod?

No underwraps needed. A size thread is more than sufficient.

Sean
I outwrap for C.F. Burkheimer Rods in Washougal, Washington. They make a lot of spey rods and single handed rods. Every single rod I have wrapped for them has been with size A thread, it's more than strong enough for anything a fly rod can handle. I've even wrapped salt water rods with roller guides and surf rods with size A thread and it works OK, just doesn't have the abrasion resistance of size D thread. Thomas F.
