I would use a automotive base coat/clearcoat. Lightly scuff with a white scotch pad. Clean then use a adhesion promoter followed by color and clear. Only use enough clear to get a slick finish. Urethane clear is flexible and the thinner it is the better.
If you have to go buy all the stuff needed. It's not going to be cheap. Paint materials are outrageous now. I painted a toyota celica awhile back. Paint and clear was 800 bucks for blue. Reds are the most expensive colors. Re: Painting rod blank

In the passed I have just used over the counter spray paint rustoleum, krylon dupli color auto touch up paint and had no issues . and to give it that glassy shine I would use the high gloss paints or a coat of clear gloss for a finish coat ,
It all works no need to break the bank , like any added coating it isn't abuse/ bullet proof. under normal conditions it is just fine. The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! Think out side the box when all else fails !!! Wi. Re: Painting rod blank

I used Dupli Color spray paint and UP40 to give a good finish, just make sure you allow the paint to fully cure and move fast with the UP40. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
