Ordering a split seat / exposed blank seat.

How do you order a these seats? I know it's done by measurements but I take it that there is little or no arbor used when applying these seats? Since the blank tapers, do you measure the larger or smaller side?

Measure the blank in MM where the seat is going to go on the blank. example; It will be mounted 10" up from the butt and at that spot the taper is 10.3 mm then get a 10.5 mm seat. The seats are sized apart in .5 mm increments (9, 9.5, 10, 10.5 etc.).

I like to go with an exposed blankreel seat that is a little smaller then the measured diameter at the reel seat location. For the example above I would buy a 10 mm seat and ream it to fit. These seats ream fairly easily if you are dealing with just a few mm. Some blank manufacturers will give blank diameters every inch or two as a convenience for sizing exposed blank reel seats and winding checks. If not ask the seller to give you the measurement of the blank where you want to place your reel seat. For a split reel seat like the PacBay Minima seat only the fixed hood part of the seat needs to be sized. The threaded barrel part will require a bushing. The Fuji SK2 split reel seat will require a bushing for both ends.

Brandon,
Another way to go is have the company supplying the blank fit a reel seat and tip top to the blank for you and have them thrown in the tube with the blank, can do the same with the guides also. Tip top specs in the catalog, or on the website aren't always right.
You can get faster answers sometimes by just searching the archives for it, you'll be surprised by the info already there on a huge amount of subjects. Also do 't forget the supplied library.
Good luck on your build.

Wow! Thanks for all the info. This will be my first build and just wanted to see how complicated a split seat would be to install. I'll probably stay simple since its my first build, but I'll consider it on my next.
