Ferrule (Spigot) issues

I bought some nice glass blanks at a very reasonable price, freshly cut and sectioned
When I got them the male ferrule was moving around, the glue had not set properly The guy I got them from is a nice old very senior rod builder and there is a chance he rushed the job When I tried to adjust the ferrule (we call it a spigot here) I pulled it out and it stuck fast and is now sticking out miles longer than the other rod I have applied for a return on the blanks as I am not satisfied with them, but the ferrule is now set and stuck fast Will the action of the rod be affected somehow, they are short, light blanks and I am in a pickle because I also ordered tons of very expensive fittings from elsewhere It's a shame as the blanks seem lovely and there are no alternatives in the UK, blanks are extremely expensive here and limited to just one or two choices only I'm very annoyed and back to square one. Could somebody please advise asap. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/28/2017 03:14PM by Tom Kirkman. Re: Ferrule (Spigot) issues

It is doubtful the tip will fit on completely now. There is usually a slight gap on any spigot type ferruled rod, but more than perhaps 1/4 inch may be excessive, not to mention that the spigot itself may now be too far out on the male end and could shear off itself or the blank at that point.

Cannot imagine the rod's intended taper and bend will not be changed, but to what degree would be difficult to predict. Worse yet, and depending upon the amount and fit of the male plug / stint remaining in the blank, and the extended length of the exposed male stint, the blank could be at increased risk of failure. I'd ask the blank maker for a refund or replacement. Re: Ferrule (Spigot) issues

Thanks guys
I didn't like it and they are going back Shame as they are nice good quality glass blanks, the guy has hundreds but bless him he is very senior now and I think he should probably @#$%& the whole lot off via a specialist @#$%& rooms Looks like I am stuck with the one or two super-expensive carbon blank suppliers over here Never mind at least they are good, and made with proper strong push on (overfit) joins not flimsy rushed ferrules Re: Ferrule (Spigot) issues

Tommy,
You could possibly to some adjustments and or even add a plug between sections and glue the joint together solidly making it a one piece rod. That way, you would not have to worry about other fit and finish issues. If you could live with the length of a one piece rod, it could be a good way to save an excellent blank. Good luck Re: Ferrule (Spigot) issues

Tommy,
If you have not already talked to your supplier, you should. There is a possibility that the spigots may be reset. Don Becker Re: Ferrule (Spigot) issues

I heated it and it moved again
I have a feeling the guy forgot to use a part of his araldite and used just one tube as it still stank a week later Anyway I reset it with properly mixed araldite and it seems fine. I put an extra tight protection wrap at the point where the ferrule inserts the main blank So happy days I was able to start my builds, and they have been fun so far but first impressions are that things are not that easy without a posh wrapper/dryer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
