Choosing the right components

So Im a rookie at rod building. Just got my start up set and a rod kit so Im working with that.

But where its confusing since there is an abundance of selection, is picking out components for another rod build.

I specifically want to build a cranking rod next.
Any help or insight you guys could give or maybe a book I need to get which can help me find the right components for a specific build I would greatly appreciate it.

Obviously, whatever blank I go with I'll have to make sure my grips and reel seat are the right ID correct? Its just trying to decide what blank to start with.

Unless you have a local rod building supply store to go to I'd recommend one of the mail order outfits that will match the components for you, and that way you get it right without confusion or delay. The rest is up to you!

If your new and trying something you haven't used, could call one of the vendors you plan to purchase from. I recently got some new grips I wanted to try and a good reel seat only to find out they don't fit together and had to return. No rod building suppliers near me so I'm stuck calling people or relying on forums. I'm a novice as well.

Everyone has gone through your problems, the good thing is sooner, or later I've always found a rod to put those mistakes on. If you use cork, mis-sizing to say one of the new sized Fuji reel seats is only a bit of sandpaper and time to fix.

You are correct about grip ID - to a point. To widen your selection of preformed grips you need to be prepared to make preformed grips, which typically have a 1/4" to 3/8" ID, fit your selected blank. That means acquiring taper cork reamers to ream the grip to fit. The step after that is gluing up and turning your own grips.
