I go back to the Dale Clemens era of rod building. Although I only built rods for myself I have had a lot of fun doing this. As the topic indicates - I'm curious as to whether anyone has ever tried spiral guide placement for their CASTING rods?? I have built 5 for myself from light spincast rods with push button reels to a couple for heavy bass fishing or light salt water use. Personally I love em. Does not detract from casting distance and it spirals the line around the blank to where it is now on the bottom of the rod for the last half of the rod before going out the tip. Have never seen the PRO's using this set up and have NEVER run in to anyone else using one or that had even heard of the concept. Just curious as to thoughts from this group. Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

I used the spiral wrap on a spinning rod and it works great. I think it improved the casting. Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

Sure bass pros use them, ever heard of Gary Klein? He's been using them for about two decades. Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

If you spiral wrap a spinning rod the guides would be on top. I suspect Bruce is joking.

Or he may be talking about a rod with a spincast reel mounted on top. Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

All of personal batcasting builds in the future will be spiral wrapped.
On the subject are gimbals still helpful with a spiral wrapped rod? Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

They're not necessary if you spiral wrap the rod.

Putting a gimbal on a spiral wrapped trolling rod would be a help in holding the reel on the "upside" while paying out line,
especially with down-riggers. Once the rod is loaded, it is not much use. The spiral wrap itself will take care of it. Best wishes, Ron Schneider Schneider's Rod Shop Mountain Home, Arkansas [www.schneidersrods.com] mtnron40@yahoo.com 870-424-3381 Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

My heavy tuna standup rods are all spiral wrap and they all have gimbals on them. Helps to lock in the rod onto my fighting pads all of which are for rods with gimbals. Especially useful for my bent butt giant tuna rods which are all spiral wrapped. Re: SPIRAL GUIDES

Haven't made a conventional baitcaster in 6 years. All spiral wrap and no complaints yet. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
