Taper offset boxes?

Hello, quick question. When using taper offset spacing, do you taper boxes or just centers? I.e. one of the rods I'm working on has an average of 32mm between centers. The spacing will be tapered per the lined paper method from 27.75 mm at the butt to 35.75 mm at the tip. Now, each center will have a box wrapped around it. Lets say the middle one will have a 4mm box for the pattern. Do I keep 4mm from butt to tip? Or do I make the box at the tip larger than the box at the butt to match center spacing?

This is my first attempt at a closed wrap, and I think once I have this layout part down, I think I can manage the rest of the way. I've made some nice looking open patterns, just never completed the close off.

Are you wrapping on the centers or on the boxes?

I'll probably do something like the St John's cross (#36 in Mr. Clemmen's book). It has a cross with an outer and inner adjacent boxes.

I tried the taper offset method on my first 4 attempts at doing a closed wrap, with no success. After watching Rooster Rod's Perfect Crosswraps video, I skipped the TOS method, and have had several successful closed wraps. You'll find numerous threads for and against TOS here, but I'm in the group that doesn't believe it works. Set your spacing based upon rod diameter, and keep it the same down your rod. You might have to push a few threads around or wrap a few a little tighter, but it'll work.

I find ware the center of the wrap will be located and use that diameter to calculate the dimention for the layout. same dimention all the way.
It's easey and They always come out grate.

So that's two votes AGAINST taper offset...is there any votes for?

I've never used it but know some that do. My experience is that you can usually manipulate the thread, packing it a little tighter here and a little less elsewhere (burnish to close tiny spaces), and everything will close just fine. If the rod has a very steep taper it becomes a little more difficult, but most rod blanks aren't heavily tapered in the butt area.
