I am looking for some casting guides with red inserts. Any suggestions?
They are for a series of bamboo musky casting rods. Matching tip tops would be nice too. Not concerned about the price. Scott Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Thanks for the vintage guide suggestions. I am looking for a modern alternative. I thought I had read somewhere one of the guide companies were considering a red insert guide.

DYI Project?
A couple of decades ago a friend was successful in dying a guide's shock ring from white to red. Although it was not a dark red. he was proud of his work. You would need to select a guide with a white (if possible) shock ring. My friend passed on and I did not take notes on his work. The best I can do is partial information. A mixture of of heated vinegar, water, and red food coloring was used to tint the shock ring. I recall he found a better dye than food coloring and found a method in setting the red color. The only guides made as far as I recall that had white shock rings were discontinued in the 80s. Maybe the early 90s. The manufacturers were Mildrum and Perfection.
I recall the old Clemens catalogs saying to use Rit Dye. I had good success with that. If you want actual red rings, you could see if Batson or AmTak can do a run of what you want with a vapor deposition coating in red. Otherwise, hit the big @#$%& site and hope you can find enough guides for your series of rods. Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Fuji made some more of their ruby guides recently, not sure on the availability, they were $ 1000 a set if I remember right. Re: Guides With Red Inserts

I did the Rit dye thing back in the 80's.
The agate guides don't hold up to braid. $1000 a set might be too much. Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Scott, I'd like to see the blanks and handles your using for these casting rods, Dennis J. Danku (Sayreville,NJ) Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Dennis,
I make my own blanks. The handles are made on the blank with the fore grip stacked birch bark, c r b wood trigger seat and 1/4" cork for the butt grip. Scott Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Would it be possible to anodize only the frame a red color? Don Becker Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Scott, That's very cool that you can do that but after all your hard work why put on a set of guides with a high demand for color and not performance. I would go with Pac-Bay Illusion casting framed guides if you really want that rod to pop. Unless red is the only choice. Dennis J. Danku (Sayreville,NJ) Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Dennis,
I do want to have higher performance guides, was just hoping to find something with a red insert to give the rods the "look" of the old agate rings, with the performance of today's high tech materials. I do not want red frames. Might just have to go with something different. Gold color would look good too. Thanks for the suggestions all. Scott Re: Guides With Red Inserts

Yes, Now I see your problem. Years ago Fuji was making oval guides that would look great on those rods and still offer the performance to stand up to braid.
What sizes, how many, and what size tip/tops would you need? Just in case I run across something I think you can use! Correction: Not Fuji Power ovals but, KIGAN DBWZOG IG oval triangle type guides with gold frames. Dennis J. Danku (Sayreville,NJ) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/23/2017 12:44AM by Dennis Danku.
