I have had this happen four times- I made a rod using Pac Bay thread. I used Flex coat color preserver after I completed the wraps. When I put on the first coat of Rod Dancer Epoxy black stains appeared at intermittent points on the wrap--I don't understand this--some areas look fine and then some areas are stained. Anyone else have this happen?

A photo might be helpful. The CP should have sealed the wrap and since the epoxy contains no solvents it sounds odd. Are you sure you aren't seeing gaps between threads that are showing as dark areas? I suppose it is possible that something go on the wrap after the CP was applied. Again, hard to say without a photo.

How many coats of CP?

Could be areas where cp did not thoroughly coat the wraps and the darker blank color is showing through.

Very unlikely it is staining, as the epoxy is clear! This subject come up here from time to time, and it usually found to be, light colored thread on a dark blank with insufficient thread packing. Very light colored thread on a dark blank, even with CP often has slight mottle or color shift.

Hard to tell in this case as not enough information, especially photos.

I'll try and bring up the pictures tomorrow--The thread was a ruby red on a St Croix V blank. It is intermittent- I have only had this issue with the Pac Bay thread. No problems with the Pro Wrap

Was it just one spool of thread?

If so, throw the thread in the garbage and move on.

Since it only happens to you with the one thread - pitch the thread and the problem is gone.

Once in a blue moon, I will run across a spool of thread that gives me problems of some sort. As soon as I discover that there is an issue - I rip off all of the thread that I have used from that spool, throw the thread in the garbage and move on.

I don't really worry much about - why - the problem has occurred. I just know that if a problem occurred with a particular spool of thread and I remove all such thread from my shop - I will not have that issue again with that spool of thread.
