This is a follow-up to my last thread. I just sliced off the grip. It peeled clean off on the top 4 inches just like Ron said. So I'm glad I did it. The rest was on solid as a rock. Now I have a mess to get rid of so I can put a new grip on.

There's gotta be a trick to this. Its freakin rock solid. If I go light on sanding, its gonna take hours and days of work. If I go heavy, I'd hate to cut into the blank. Is there a solvent I can use to gum up the epoxy without eating the resin in the graphite?

heat is your friend not to hot damage the blank , cut all you can then use heat ,
hot water or heat gun works the best for me, good luck do up date us on how it comes out

If you are going to cover it with a new grip clean it up the best you and don't worry about getting it pristine. Heat will soften the epoxy making it easier to scrape off. I use a piece of split bamboo as my scraper, it is very hard and holds enough of an edge to scape the epoxy but is gentle enough not to damage the blank finish. I know that split bamboo pieces are not very common to come by, so try something like a pop sickle stick or a plastic knife, or a piece of hard wood with an edge on it. Fine sand paper or steel wool will aiso work If you are nor worried about the underlying finish can scape using a razor blade or utility knife held perpendicular to the blank this will take it right down to the bare blank, but no damage.

Use a heat gun to heat up the epoxy.

Use a single edge razor blade held perpendicular to the blank and then use the blade as a scraper to scrape the glue and grip off of the blank. With the glue heated up and softened, you should have everything cleaned up in under 5 minutes.

You can also use a paint scrape with the blade of the scraper held perpendicular to the blank and scrape off the heated softened glue and blank material. The paint scraper gives you a nice handle to grip when scraping.

Thanks Norm. I'm not trying to get it perfect, but it at least needs to be to where I can get a good fit on the next one. It's pretty thick at the top where the gap was from the first grip. I guess I can just send that down a bit more level and got from there. Also will try the perpendicular blade. I've been using a plastic spoon where I sanded the handle to an edge on the belt sander.

The butt end is still pretty well covered in a thin layer of EVA. I sanded it down pretty close to the blank though. What a nightmare. I will never make this mistake again! Damn sometimes learning can be such a b!tch...

I used a knife and whittled it down on the rod I'm rebuilding now.
The epoxy they used turned hard over the years as well.
After knife scraping I went at it with some sandpaper glued to a piece of wood to smooth it down.
