Fly line and Common Cents

I have a bunch of unlabeled fly lines that I need to measure in order to get an idea of their line weight. Was there an article in RodMaker Magazine that showed how to use the Common Cents system to do this? If so, does anyone know which issue it was in? Thanks in advance! Ladd

The obsolete AFTMA "line weight" system applies only to the weight of the 1st 30 feet of line, which used to be the length of the heads of fly lines. Today the heads of integrated fly lines vary between 18' and 50'. Combine that uncertainty with the ongoing evolution of minimizing rod "weight" designation by rod manufacturers and you pretty much have to test cast the line that you mate to your rod in order to get the best combination. You can buy more lines until you find the one with the right "weight" for your rod or you can join a fly fishing club. Members are usually quite willing to let you try out their lines on your rod to find the one you like best. If you are building a rod for someone else they will have to test lines for themselves.

Don't know of the CCS method, but the one most used, is to weigh the first 30 feet of the line and then use the chart found on the site link below. This requires an accurate scale.

hi ladd..try volume 6 issue 4 for dr. bills fly ine analizer...i made one and was ver surprised at how accurate it is... i also use it ti weigh my bass hair bugs dry and wet. lol.

The AFTMA standard measure of fly lines - the weight in grains of the first 30 feet of fly line - was adopted in 1961, before the commercial appearance of the first graphite rod. AFTMA bamboo-fiberglass era fly line specifications have not changed in 56 years. The AFTMA disappeared 40 years ago. In 1961 every integrated fly line had a 30 foot head. Today precious few fly lines have a 30 foot head. Chances are your new line doesn't have a 30 foot head. The old AFTMA is quaint but of little use. How about fly line makers reveal the weight of the first 15', 20', 25', 30', 35', 40', 45' and 50' of their fly lines? Savvy fly anglers could use this information to buy the right line the first time, not waste a couple hundred bucks.
