Hey I'm about to do my first build and was thinking of doing a small 6-8" wrap. I know with fly rods weight is everything but how much could a wrap really affect the performance. I've done a few wraps on dowels and feel comfortable so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Weight and where you put the weight, are two different things. A short crosswrap just above the handle isn't going to upset the rod by any practical measure.

You an also include inlaid turns or grape vines in the ferrule reinforcing wraps with essentially no weight penalty. Re: New to building. Wrapping a 9' 8wt fly rod

Thanks for the help. I was thinking of doing single thread inlays on the ferrules as well. Maybe some olive branches.
