Hi at all. I have read a few posts where many of you prefer double-edge razor blades rather than single edge blades because those of you consider them to be sharper. I have found that to be true also. But with my clunky, abused hands, I need a conventional-height blade rather than one broken in two with the dull edge taped. I have discovered single edge, precision-ground razor blades which perform at least as well as a double edge blade, including edge retention. They are available from McMaster Carr, part # 3962A4, $14.90 / 100. That is about double the price of standard blades, but they do work exceptionally well and worth it as far as I am concerned. Just thought I’d pass it along and hopefully help those of you have helped me so much. Mark Talmo FISHING IS NOT AN ESCAPE FROM LIFE BUT RATHER A DEEPER IMMERSION INTO IT!!! all I ever have done is to use a piece of duct tape on the other edge of a double edge blade works the same as the single edge and it gave enough to hold it with out getting cut The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! If I buy double edge blades I wanna use both edges, gotta invent a shield that allows use of both edges safely. Replaceable blade scalpels are the ticket. Single edge hair trimmer blades are also very good. As for double edge, Feather blades from Japan might be the sharpest of all. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/2017 08:03PM by Lynn Behler. From my previous life as a carpet installer I recommend Personna Carpet blades. I once knelt on one and the Doctor asked me between stitches what I cut myself with. He said his scalpel wasn't that sharp. Yes they are double edge. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/2017 09:07PM by Don Lukehart. Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

Mark,
If you are needing a razor blade to cut thread - use a pair of scissors rather than a blade. I use the "Arrow" fly tying scissors from Dr. Slick and haven't used a razor blade in several years. I have also only sharpened the scissors once in all of that time. [www.drslick.com] Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

If you insert pull-through very early - like 3/8" before end of wrap - and cut off thread with scissor almost flush with wrap you will never get ends showing and not need a blade.

I am with Herb, insert your tie off loop early and cut your thread with scissors before pulling you tie off loop completely through. Have not used razor blades for years. No nubs to deal with.

Roger, I have considered scissors but for whatever reason haven’t as of yet. But I will have to give them a try. For the past 30+ years, I have gone through over 1000 heavy-duty razor blades per year doing whatever and am just very comfortable them. My wife laughs at me when I use razor blades and a straight edge to cut wrapping paper. But those regular blades just don’t cut-it with rod wrapping thread.
Herb and Robert, I have buried the tag end under the wraps since I started wrapping about a year ago. Never saw the point of pulling the tag all the way through, using it to pull the wrap threads back a bit and then trying to cut flush without fuzzies and/or nicking the blank. I am a stickler and attempt to minimize the bump in the wrap from the pulled through tag by cutting as close as possible. Some of my wraps only afford me with four wraps over the pull-through. But, as mentioned earlier, I think I’ll have to give scissors a shot, as long as the loops are large enough for my cluncky thumb and fingers. But for those looking for an awesome, single edge razor blade, the precision ground blades from McMaster Carr definitely fit the bill. Mark,
I use braided 10 lb fishing line for pull threads. I thread on a bright bead and tie a knot in the large loop. The pull loop is easy to use and easy to find - due to the bright bead if dropped on the floor. The braided line appears to be slicker and smaller than wrapping thread so it makes thread pulling easier than using wrapping thread for the pull thread. Be safe Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

I'm in the scissors and early tie off loop insertion camp also. Only use blades when I absolutely have to. Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

I do the same as above. Pull the tie off loop tight to the edge of the wrap then cut with scissors and pull through. I hated using razors so I started doing it like that, and now I'm so much happier. Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

Add me to the scissors and early tie off loop camp. Works great and you never have to worry about needing to redo a wrap because you inadvertently nicked the wrap. Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

This is the model professional barbers use. Not inexpensive but very good. Parker SR1 . Uses their own single edge blades or break a double edge in half. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/29/2017 03:33PM by Ken Preston. Re: Sharpest Razor Blades

Moreso than anything else...use a blade with a single bevel. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
