what is this wrapping thread?????

What is this stuff? Not usual rod wrapping thread…….
A charter captain (freshwater) brought in a half dozen trolling rods that had standard stainless steel wire boat guides. He had run wire line through them and grooved all of the guides.
While I was replacing them I was having a hard time cutting through the ‘wrapping thread.” The rods are all Shimano Talora brand trolling rods. The “thread” (black) is flat, not round. And when cut does not cut clean but rather frays. It looks a lot like the thread that I use for spinning deer hair (Kevlar like) on bass flies.
I repair about 250 freshwater rods a year and haven’t seen this stuff before. What is it? Why do they use it? I called Shimano and they could not answer my question. They said they would get back to me. They didn’t.
Thanks, Buzz

Buzz -
I think this is what you're dealing with - and you're correct that it is basically kevlar : [www.aramid.eu]

Ken is probably correct. Kevlar will make any other thread seem wimpy. I use quite a bit of Aramid (Kevlar) woven fabric in my composite business for its strength, toughness and abrasion resistance but know better than using it for wrapping guides. While it handles and wets-out like CF or FG, specialized shears, drill bits and saw blades are required, and even those require sharpening constantly. Good luck!
