This is my guide spacing from tip back: tip,4,9,15,22,31,41,51,63,76,90,106,123,142,. I start with a size 20, 16, 12 10,then the rest all 8 running guides. I DO NOT use a tip top guide just a 8 running guide

I bet there isn't a tip top with a size 8 ring only 6 or less to fit the blank so rather than use a smaller ringed guide it is replaced with a wrapped single foot guide the same as a tip top just with out the tube that does add weight to the tip of the rod

Plus the line flow is better with just a guide. No step up to the tip top. Trying to minimize the amount of drag on the line while using a center pin reel

Wrapped single foot for a tip is old school.
I stopped doing that a while ago.
I now run 20, 12, 8 in mid/high frames and then change to single foot fly guides on out to the tip and use a normal tip top.
Don't have any drag issues and the single foot fly guides are noticeably lighter giving you a crisper feeling rod.

Dave
