So, we've all seen the multitude of threads about painting rods, but I thought I'd add this little tidbit to the mix. 2K urethane is the top choice for a clearcoat, being flexible and ultra durable. SprayMax is a user friendly approach to getting this finish, as it does not require a compressor, gun, mixing paint (at least in a separate bucket), etc.

I have a shop near me that supplies paint to the auto body shops in my area that sells this stuff. I called for pricing yesterday, and was informed that they can tint this stuff! WHAT??? I know. So you can now have an ultra durable, glossy, single stage paint to apply to your rods if desired (provided you have a shop near you that can do the same). I'd still prime with white or gray depending on your color, but this will speed things up significantly. Especially if you were using a lacquer color paint that you have to let gas off for a few weeks before clear coating. I asked and he said it coats it opaque, not like a transparent color.

Anyways, I was stoked to find this out because I enjoy painting my rods, and figured I'd share. Happy Easter and happy building!

When I worked in my grandfather's body shop I don't remember having to wait weeks for the lacguer to off gas. Other than the wet sanding involved, everything went pretty quickly. At that time there was nothing more beautiful than a well done lacquer job. If you search the archives, I think this paint system has been discussed before.

Yes I've seen it discussed several times, but never the ability to have it COLORED. That was the point of the post.

As far as off gassing, I'm not a paint specialist, just going off what I've read. And I'm talking specifically urethane over lacquer. I know you can apply lacquer over lacquer at any time.

Randy you probably can get good paint at you local auto parts store and not break the bank as for painting a blank you could use just about any paint that is available in spray cans they will all work never has a problem with cracking or chipping but that is just my opinion

The article went into specifics about the ability to color it. But no matter since most of the folks here don't take the magazine. Thanks for bringing it up - I found it to be a pretty decent product.

if you have a airbrush use createx Wicked line or their autobourn and auto air colors. You can pick them up at Hobby Lobby and are water based. Still use a respirator and clear with Spraymax. You can even use a silver base and hit with wicked candies 2.0 to tint your your rod any color then clear. You do not have to wait a long period of time between paint and clear either

This is a urethane clear If you are doing several blanks -- After being painted it is a very good clear The same as a car is painted put a lacquer paint on Prep - then use it to clear -- BUT - Once it is mixed it will have to be used UP -- or will set in the can - so doing several blanks is wise to have ready to clear coat
There are several other products that are very good and can be used on just one blank at a time Flex Kote is one such product
