Finish Issues.....

Not new at this...have been wrapping rods for 30 years and worship Dale Clemens as a demi-god. Have done minimal wrapping for several years but have started doing many more since I am semi-retired. I have recently been having an issue with uneven, irregular, or bumpy finish....never use to have this happen. Have used FlexCoat, Flexcoat Lite, and U-40 LS Supreme (did a few with Clemens Crystal Coat and they are fantastic 25-30 years later....alas, I am out of that). Originally I thought maybe the FLexCoat Lite I was using may have frozen at sometime (I use to live in ALaska).....so I chucked it and got some new FlexCoat. It's not the 1st coat I put on.....I have problems when I use a second coat with it drying lumpy and bumpy despite rotation for several hours. Could this be a result of silicone contamination with syringes I am using? Any other ideas??

Thanks...Brian

Brian

Where is the bumpy lumpy? Everywhere? Only on the butt wrap?

Never use syringes from a drug store. They have silicone. We only recommend ours because we know that they are silicone free and they are cheap.

Freezing doesn't hurt Flex Coat Finish, just warm it up and melt any crystals and it will work fine.

Are you working from the tip to the butt when applying the finish? FLex Coat that is not freshly mixed lays down smoother so it is better to start at the tip and work toward the butt where you bigger wraps are. Technique is big when it comes to getting a perfect finish. Here is a link to our video on how we do it:

Silicone will cause fisheyes but not uneven finish. It sounds to me like you are applying too much per application.

Here is a good primer for you to read if you haven't already:

Hi Brian ,

Out of curiosity, do you apply with a brush or spatula? And what temps have you been applying at?

Take care,

Chris
