I am having a discussion with another rod builder about the Spey cork, my opinion is the cork grips with the burl trim is more popular than just the plane cork grips, it looks richer and dresses up the rod very nicely.

There must be guys out there that build Spey rods, what's your opinion. I also feel, my opinion again that the rod becomes a little more valuable when built going the extra mile with the burled cork grips

My bet is a bottle of good scotch, his choice.

Because Spey grips are large, adding burl or wood trims are quite popular, they brae up the long expanse of plain cork.

If you look you will find many commercially available Spey grips with burl, so it is not just the custom grip maker.

the start an stop rings should not be BURL use reg cork or a rubber cork mix's it will hold up a lot longer over time , the glue that is used
in the BURL rings is not that strong, use BURL in the handle but the stop, start cork rings take a lot of beating , as I think ,

Get some 18 year old Macallan Phil that's really good stuff at 200 or more a bottle, I don't drink, but seeing as I won the bet I think huge steak would do me.

It seems the majority of people I have spoken to agree the rubberized ring as a trim is the most popular. Your comment about the length of the cork with no trim I agree. I have a 15 foot 10/11 wt Spey rod I built a quite a few years ago and the cork looks nice but the trim rings would make it look better for sure. As Bill commented the trim ring is rubber not burl, just a miscue on the term.
