Trying to figure out what's the lightest tip slow action blank to buy. Not clued in as yet to any specs that might help, either. Since fiberglass is flimsier than graphite, interested in any info on this, too. Thanks.

Depending on the power you wish to have in the rod; often rods and blanks that are reputed to be good for trout fishing make just such rods.

If you want a longer rod, then the use of the longer salmon drift rods might be the rod for you.

That's helpful already, Roger & Herb. I've built an ultra-light trout rod for my son, for salmon egg use. I find it a little too stiff. Made it about 15 years ago when I didn't have much internet use, so my buying power was more of a shot in the dark. I know such a rod can be super, super light, slow action all the way down the blank compensating for a tip that might just break off, if fast action, because I bought one--3 1/2-feet long--commercially in 2000. Now can't find such anywhere, online or not. This rod I use is such a willow switch that I feel a weightless salmon egg, no weight added but the size 14 hook and size 18 snap (no swivel), I feel that salmon egg load on the cast. Not too much, of course, but I feel it.

Have you thought about building a rod on the tip section of a 7 ft. 2 piece 2 or 3 power fly rod blank? How much money you want to spend?

Don't overlook bamboo blanks as an option. Most are deep parabolic (bend down to the grip) are light and have been 'go to' rods for a very long time when fishing for trout. Check Angler's Roost. He';s got lots of choices from full kits to individual blanks - oh and he also has some very light fiberglass kits down to one / two weight rods at VERY affordable pricing. Since your son is 15 years older are you considering a longer rod.

I'm in the process of building a super light power 4'6" noodle rod cut down from a 5' Batson rainshadow SPG601 e-glass . It's for a friend that wants it for a slammer type tip-up (for ice fishing). This blank is cheap like $15. It might b worth checking out, you can cut some off of the butt or tip to find that action or feel that you're looking for.

All interesting so far, and I'll do the research. My son's coming with me Opening Day, but after that, he'll probably keep the rod as a memento. He just got accepted to NYU today. Otherwise, my willow switch is good enough for me, but I'm writing a book on the salmon egg method. I devote a chapter to building the rod, so I need to carefully uncover what the market offers for components. I want to make the best recommendations I can for my readers.
