So I customized a production trout rod I have. I ended up removing the label and applied marbling over top of the area. I then added a trim band close to the grip and topped the area with a dragon scale section. I ended up using some mesh tape on the blank then applied my metallic thread over top of it. I found that mapping out the area with tape first then applying the mesh tape helped in the long run. After applying the thread I cut off the excess mesh tape using a razor blade. Using the masking tape on the blank helped to prevent the razor blade from nicking the blank when cutting the mesh tape.

Anyone do something different when creating dragonscale wraps?

The first ones were done by a guy named David Gottfried if I recall correctly, but he just referred to them as textured wraps. We ran his article in one of the very early issues of RodMaker way back in '98 or so. That early article is in the online library here. It's pretty brief and very basic and you may not learn anything new from it, but it's there for whatever it might be worth.
