Major rod fighting butt real seat replacement

Hi,

I've got a vintage Major Rod brand build in the 70's that I want to replace the real seat.

The particularity of those rod is that the real seat slide directly over a ferrule on the rod.

I'd ordered a Pac Bay seat model CL20MS but the inner tube is ribbed and it dont fit on the ferrule.

I dont have any supplier around to go onsite and look for something that will fit. I dont want to order 30 reel seat to finally find one working.

So i'm asking the community if you know some seat that will fit over this kind of ferrule.

There is a pic of the connection with a good real/butt

best regards

you need to know the size of the male end that inserts to the seat and order a seat from that measurement or you can ream the seat you purchased already to fit the male end of the ferrule and hope fully it wouldn't be to much as to affect the strength of the seat
But you might be better off ordering the next size up as the you wouldn't need to remove to much of the ribs as that is there the seat draws its strength from.

The original seat is I do believe a heavy brass machined seat because of the stress the handle gets being a plug in style handle so a molded carbon seat will not have the strength .

What is your end intent for the rod, make it usable for fishing,or restore it just to restore it. Suggestions will likely depend on your direction of intent.

@Matthew

The original seat seem to be aluminum only. I'll try to ream it to see if I can see some brass under the chrome.

Thanks for confirming that carbon or graphite wouldnt be a viable option.

Dont mind ordering another seat, but just wondering if all the "offshore" or "heavy duty" model are ribbed?

As reaming the brand new seat, i dont really know of to procede keep everything centered and briging the seat to a machinist shop will cost more than a brand new rod.

@ Paul

My intent is just make the rod fishable with a sturdier reel seat that the old one that I find too flimsy

I think this is the way you should go about this repair. Understand that this is ONE example. You will need to measure the outside diameters of the wooden butt section. In effect you will be replacing both parts.

Another approach could be to remove both the reel seat AND the ferrule and join the two remaining parts under a new reel seat - which would mean a one piece rod. The only thing you would have to know is the length of reel seat needed for the two parts to fit under the seat...

I looked at the picture, the reel seat is brass.

I use to have several of those laying around. I will look and see if I can find any of them. Have you tried looking at Flea Markets or @#$%& or yard sales. Find an old rod with that type of seat and use it. If you are unable to find one e mail me and I will be glad to look around here.

Hello David.

I think they are Lakeland seats, they made 2 sizes 1: the 3163, OD: .875", Length: 4.62", and the 5163, OD: 1", Length: 4.875".

I got mine from MudHole and Jann's.

The ones I got from Jann's were 1: the 252-400, OD: 4.875", ID: .875", Length: 4.875", 2: the 252-401, OD: 1", ID: .906", Length: 5".

That's right out of their books 2008 Janns, & 2007-2010 MudHole.

Good luck finding any now they were discontinued years ago.

I have two old chrome plated reel seats that I will never use. One is a Varmac RS 2 with a male ferrule, the other is a no name reel seat. Both have an ID of 13/16" ( 0.8125" ) or 20.6 mm. If these are of any potential use to you, you can have them.
