Newbie question about closed wraps

I just finished my first closed wrap...a double wrap on a large blank...And I only had to fill in about 1 mm to close the wrap, so it was pretty easy to bring it all together. It turned out well for my first one ( not a contest winner, but few outside of this forum would know that, and everyone reading this post had their first!). I'm getting ready to build another on a smaller blank that isn't large enough to do a double wrap, but will leave about 6 mm to fill in. I did a trial run today on my test blank to check out the colors, but can't figure out how I can close the wrap without drawing attention from the pattern (a blue eagle with red and white stripes). Is there a way to alter the pattern to finish as a closed wrap without adding threads and still stay square? In the likely event I'm asking the question wrong, is there a way to plan my layout threads for a pattern that is 21mm on a rod with a circumference of 34 mm and have the patterns start and stop within the layout? There are countless photos in here that look as if each pattern starts and stops with next...How do you guys do that?
Thanks in advance for any insight! And thanks for the knowledge you have already shared...Priceless!

Some will undoubtedly point you to TOS (Taper Off-set Spacing) as your solution. Personally I subscribe to Steve Paterson's method. Simply put if you are careful in measuring the distance between the cross-over points the diameter of the rod makes no difference. The diameter of the thread doesn't change (unless you apply more/less tension) and the distance doesn't change therefore the same number of threads will fit in the same area between cross-overs. I think he has some photos posted here. His video (I think MudHole has it) is excellent for starting/filling/finishing closed wraps.

I agree with you about TOS...my first attempt at a closed wrap using TOS didn't end well, and after watching Steve's DVD I was able to finish my second closed wrap with minimal issues. What I've been trying to figure is how to close my wrap with my last thread of the pattern adjacent to the first thread. I'm away from my bench until this weekend, so I can't experiment until then, but what I'm thinking about trying is measuring thr first pattern based upon my blank circumference in order stay square, and then creating "half boxes" going up the blank only the width of my pattern, and using those half boxes as my layout. Is that something you've tried, or does it sound like it might work?
Thanks so much for your time and input!

Yes - that will definitely help you keep everything squared up.
