Using spar varnish/and or poly urethane to cover rod thds

Has anyone over coated threads on a fishing rod with the above coatings. Both would seem to have enough toughness to protect the threads and spar varnish has I've protection.

Robert,
You can do it, but the epoxy coatings specifically do such a wonderful job, it makes me wonder why one would want to use anything else.

Take care

Polyurethane is easy, but takes several coats. Other than that it's fine. At least one company markets a furniture type poly as a rod thread wrap finish.

Varnish was the standard for bamboo rods, and used extensively before access to epoxies.

I had a thread similar to this. The end result, purchase the right equipment for the job and you wont have a reason to question the purchase. I already made the mistake of attempting to use the wrong stuff for threads..that won't happen again.
