An average 6'6" spinning rods built with Fuji KR concept seems to have 8-9 guides, and I see these 9' shore rods with only 8-9 guides. Funny thing is, Fuji recommends about 11 guides for a long rod like that. At first I thought the companies were going cheap on the guides but soon figured out that even the top quality rods as well as custom built ones are equipped with a couple fewer guides than Fuji standard when it comes to those lengthy rods. Why would the companies stick to Fuji standard with their shorter rods but put fewer guides on their longer sticks? What's the logic behind this?

comes down to the action of a given rod and to many could impair the action, flex and recovery on a cast and the line path if it is oscillating through the guides or the flow is straight and even some times more guides can cause the line to crowd resulting diminished casting distance and tangling. Jmho

Longer rods do not always more guides, or even as many as a shorter rod. The power of the rod plays some role in how many should be used, along with handle length. Many 9 foot plugging rods have handles that are quite long compared to 9 foot rods of other types, such as salmon and steelhead models.

As has been said many times before, use the correct type, size, and number of guides to get the best out of a particular rod blank for a particular fishing need.

Perhaps the blank nees 4 guides and perhaps the blank needs 14 guides. Use only the minimum number of guides required to accomplish the specific function of the rod.

Of course, the cynical among us may ask, "What so unusual about the guide manufacturer suggesting that we use more guides?" :) Just saying'... If they could get away with it, I suspect Shimano would advise that we all have three reels for every rod! As others have posted, use the minimum number of guides that meet the need.

BTW, there's a Japanese rodbuilding company called Zenaq and probably some of you have already heard of the name because of their extreme RG guide system. Let alone the RG, they seem to put at least one or two more guides on their rods compared to the average. Pretty interesting and definitely worth checking out.

Just checked out the Zenaq page..pretty interesting. The bamboo work rods look insanely cool.

Yeah when I purchase a LRF or shore jigging rod it will be one of theirs.
