Wood insert I.D. What is the deal?

Looking at reel seats with wood inserts to fit a Fiberglass rod blank having butt diameter of. 0.471. All wood inserts I have looked at (over 30) have a inside tube diameter between .312 and .380. Is it common to bore a wood insert to a limited larger size? Whey are wood insert inside diameter so small? Outside diameter of wood insert is generally .620 to .640.

Because most of their application is on smaller diameter rods. In many cases they need to be shimmed, so a larger ID would require even more shimming.
It is a response to market demand.

Is shimming completed by use of a inner support core? Would it be common to bore inside insert diameter to fit a rod blank with larger butt diameter than wood insert?

You can bore your insert but remember to keep enough wood for support (integrity).

Other way you cut your blank (length of cut = length o reel seat) and you insert and glue a lenght of thinner Blank in to support your insert.

That bore ID on a .640 OD should never be an issue

Shimming can be done with foam and graphite cores available or masking tape.

Bellinger ULS 740, or 810. Myself I'd get the 740 and ream it a bit.

Most likely with that butt OD it is a brand blank that is a 5wt, and a .740 or .810 size seat is really a bit too big for that build
