I talked to my brother and he decided he wanted to add another rod for walleye fishing for his fund raiser. I am getting 6'9" medium lite blank and I was thinking of using the Pac Bay Single Foot Minima Guides Model SV guides for this rod. My question is what size guides do I use? Do I start with a size 30 sv25sv and 20sv then go to a smaller size for some runners like Minima Fly & Running Guides Model F in a size five or six? I usually get the CRB guide kits from mud hole but I kind of wanted to try these guides out for this rod. Any advice would be great, I'm not used to ordering guides individually. Thanks Jusitn

For a med light blank you most likely plan to use fairly light line, like mono 8 or less, braid 15 or less, and then you need that first guide to be no bigger than a 20. Maybe a 16 if a higher model Y. Then the others go down from there. I suggest you look at the Fuji groups on the Anglers Resource site, catalog button, to see what Fuji recommends, even it you don't plan to use Fuji. You will see what they are recommending and how the line you plan to use affects their guide size recommendations. Then choose the Pac Bays with similar logic. Test cast to make sure it works as you intend it to.

If I were doing that rod I would use the Fuji KL-H group per the Fuji recommendations depending on line. The group would be KL-H16, KL-H8, KL-5.5M., then 5.5's to the tip. First two running guides KB-5.5"s. for braid to 15.

Justin, as I mentioned in your other post, ring size is less. Important than guide height. Minima Match guides and Fuji KL-H guides have the highest guide height for ring size. So I do concur with Michael on using KR or KR-like concept guides. I normally use smaller running guides, but running guide size is up to you, and is part of the versatility of the KR concept.

I have built a lot of walleye rods similar to the one you mention. I always start with a size 25 match guide, then go down to an SV 16, SV10 and then F runners to the tip.

When I built rods using an SV butt guide, I would always end up with line slap on the blank. So, I would have to go back and remove it and replace it with a taller match guide.
