Question on keeping track of a butt wrap

So it has been a while since I wrapped anything and am getting back into it.
I have a casting blank that I am wrapping for my daughter.
I am doing a cross wrap with an underwrap.
I marked it out more than once lol.
I have an axis on the top and an axis on the bottom.
It did take a bit to remember which direction to go, best way to hold the thread, whether I was wrapping up or down etc.
What I didnt realize was that using these markings I actually have two up and two down to complete "1" symmetrical wrap.
What this means is that it was easy to lose my place when I was using similar colors.
Anybody have some tips on keeping track of this that might make it easier?

First I have done in a while but didnt come out too bad.
Pic does not do the colors justice.
