epoxy vs permagloss

I have finished rods both with two-part epoxy and with permagloss and I am aware of many of the pros and cons of each in terms of their application and curing. I'm still not too sure of the comparative advantages and disadvantages of these finishes in use or for use in what conditions. Advertising hype aside, what are the practical strengths and faults of these finishes when they are in use?

PermaGloss is harder yet more flexible than epoxy. It is water white clear and will never yellow. It's very tough. It does not generally require turning while it sets. It also requires at least 3 applications for best use, and up to 5 or more if you want to build any "depth" in the finish. It is a moisture curing urethane and sets very quickly, sometimes in the bottle in humid areas if certain precautions are not take, although the company claims its new bottle top has remedied much of that problem. It does out-gas some vapors that are quite strong and not exactly good for you.

Epoxy is easy for some to use and difficult for others. It can often provide sufficient coverage in just one application, although can be applied in more. Pot life varies according to brand. Must be mixed in equal quantities. All epoxies will eventually yellow either in the bottle or on the wraps. Life span is very compared to older varnish type finishes. It keeps forever, although the resin may crystalize and have to be heated to return it to normal. It is generally heavier than Permagloss, but only if it is applied to a greater depth.

In my experience, Permagloss is much more likely to attack stuff like decals, even when they are covered with CP. If doing anything other than covering thread, a test is a good idea.

I take it the durability of these two finishes is comparable, and so is the weight they add to a finished blank?

No, PermaGloss is much harder and longer wearing. And it is lighter unless you really begin to pile on the coats.
