Ferrule Direction / Orientation

Hi to all.
Is there a prescribed or preferred direction to mount a two-piece rod ferrule, male on the tip or butt section? I realize there are different types or styles of ferrules which may dictate their orientation. The one I have in question is German silver, the male is a simple cap which bottoms out on the end of the blank. The female is swaged to accept the male and is approximately twice as long. It would be nice to have the male pointing up so water would be shed off the joint rather than allowed to run into it while resting in a holder or such, butt….

You're most likely going to find that the female ferrule is sized a bit larger than the male which would indicate that the maker intended it to be located on the bottom half of the two rod sections. This also places the heavier female ferrule a bit lower on the rod, which is a good thing.

Tom,
I was fairly certain you would reply, so thanks yet again. Actually, the male and female halves are within 0.003 of each other. I agree the heavier, and probably the half of a ferrule which covers more of the blank as well, would be best served on the lower section considering weight along the length of the rod and would also think rod flex would correlate similarly. I was just wondering if there was a set-in-stone direction to install as to avoid exposing my rookie status to seasoned professionals if installed upside-down.

If installed as you contemplate, it would be "upside down." The female half is designed to go onto the larger lower rod section. If sized correctly for a bamboo rod the female section usually fits the blank with very little work done on the bamboo to fit. On the other hand the male section of bamboo usually needs more surface removal (rounding).
If however this is being used on other than bamboo, and especially if it is used to make 2pcs from 1, there is likely very little diameter differences in the pcs.

If the ferrule sections are lapped for a good snug fit, there should be very little chance of water entering the joint, and the female section should be capped within the pc.

Thanks to all. I mounted the male on the tip section as prescribed by you rod docs. It certainly is comforting to know I can always count on you guys.
