Im re wrapping a GLX classic fly rod.

Any idea single foot guides brand used by Gloomis those days.

They are really wonderfull fly guides

I have had groove issues with many fly guides except those ones.

Thxs in advance and sorry for my english.

I spoke to owner of REC last week - I am pretty sure he said they sell their REC Recoil guides to GLoomis for their fly rods.
If you can wait - REC is coming out with a new s/f Recoil guide in a few months - one that will hold the line off the blank. They are also coming out with a ceramic guide.

I've tested Snake Brand flyguides and rec flyguides. They are very good ones but grooving is an issue.

I live in Bariloche, Patagonia Argentina. A volcano exploted some years ago. There is a lot of silic dust in the river. Silic dust is letal for guides.

The only fly guides that have never grooved were those used on the glx classic.

Do you know the brand or model?

They are single foot guides. Ti color.

A good bet is that they are silicon carbide guides. This is one of the guides that will hold up to the volcanic dust that you experience.

I looked at my GLOOMIS 10wt from the mid 90'S.
They are not REC Recoil- sorry
Best bet is to contact GLOOMIS.

Looks like you got your answer hopefully, had me confused since G Loomis still make a classic series GLX. My very early 6 wt. GLX from 1993 or 1994 has the plated stainless guides Bob discribed.

What guides does G. Loomis (Shimano) use now? For that matter, what materials does Van Stall (Zebco) use on their reels? As the Bard asked, "What's in a name?"

Purty sure that Sebastian is citing an old quote from Bob Batson. Maybe Bill Batson can provide an update on materials used, then and now.

There are two vendors that supply SIC inserts to this industry, and they are both in Japan. Fuji uses one, PB and I the other.
The reason that we first started (1991) developing the TIN and TiCH processes for rod guides and tops, was because we were trying to come up with something that no one else in the rod component field was producing. At the same time, a process that would prove to be impervious to saltwater. We started with the TIN (gold), and then went to the TiCH (gunsmoke). When the gunsmoke TiCH was completed, I took it to Loomis. At that time Gary was the only person that was willing to take a risk, come out with something totally different, and market it along with his latest in technology. He used the TiCH, in guides, tops, and the single foot wire fly rod guide, on his GLX series. We gave him exclusive usage for two years. I believe that this was in the later part of 1994.
Now, many rod manufacturers and custom rod builders are using these items in their higher end product lines. Also available in these coatings are guides rings. The Tin and Tich process is applied over the zirconium ring, with the most durable and appealing of the inserts being fairly thin, with a nice radius.
There are some component factories out there that do not quite have the procedures of the process down yet, so beware. The guide frame should have a consistent light gunsmoke color, with depth and brilliance to it. Saltwater will not harm these guides and tops at all.

To clarify.

Loomis glx before 1994 used Pacbay tich (gunsmoke) single foot guides?
Loomis glx after 1994 used rec single foot guides?


Spencer. are your 1993 guides grooved?
are your rec guides grooved?

I think old guides were a lot more Abrasion resistant!

I have used SnakeBrand guides and they are grooved too.

I have used thes guides a lot over the years and the look exactly like the guides on my old GLX fly rod. Although they look the same I was not sure until I saw the above posts.

None of the guides on my GLX have ever grooved, I fish quite a few streams with lots of glacial silt in them from time to time. I'm big on keeping my lines clean and stretched before use though, some things taught don't go away.
