Dwight,
To increase the rod response, replace the tip 4 guides with single foot light wire titanium fly guides. Titanium wire is lighter. Single foot requires less wraps. The fly guides can be used in a spinning rod as the line is on the bottom of the guide away from the blank when under load. The light wire can be used where the blank requires less load to deflect. Fly rod tip tops may also be used to decrease weight. Gene Re: removing finish to stiffen blank?

I have wondered if the light wire guides.....6 of them from 12 down to 3 would be lighter than a set of the minimas? Would use one for the tip too. Might be interesting see what the outcome is. Re: removing finish to stiffen blank?

Just went down to my work shop and compared the weight of 5 size1 single ft wire fly guides with 5 size 4 minima F guides on my balance beam scale. The minimas were lighter!

Thank you - I'm surprised a little and happy, the best of everything. I wanted the minimas. Re: removing finish to stiffen blank?

Dwight sorry should have mentioned this earlier in the discussion but some times crs gets the best of me now
Your looking to make it as light as possible this is something I did and was great for saving weight on light rods for trout and panfish back in the 70's Fenwick had a rod they called a flea weight a super ultra light I improved on it I made a 1 1/2 ounce 4 ft ultra light just by using 00 fly tying thread I do know that Gudebrod makes it and they also make a 000 thread both are nylon if you wrap with it the color is some what transparent but only requires a light coat of finish if you don't use color preservative they are transparent makes a slick look on a rod The best day to be alive is always tomorrow !! Think out side the box when all else fails !!! Wi. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
